John Hughes, landlord of the " Heart of Oak," was brought up to answer the complaint of Police-constable Powell, No. 1, for having on the evening of Saturday last, between the hours of ten and eleven, assaulted and otherwise illtreated him. The defendant admitted what the policeman ha,1 given in evidence, and stated that he had been to supper with a friend, and was not quite himself; and promised never to do so again. This being his first offence, he was fined in the mitigated penalty of five shillings and costs, which were immediately paid.
