SALE OF FREEHOLD PROPERTY. Smith's Hotel, otherwise known as "24," Great Darkgate street, was offered for sale by public auction on Wednesday at the Lion Hotel by Mr William Manton, auctioneer, Ledbury, assisted by Mr Arthur Smith, the owner's son, and who is now engaged in Mr Manton's employ. The auctioneer, in describing the sale, mentioned the property as one of the most desirable for business purposes, being situated in the centre of the town, and the business carried on there being one of the oldest in the town. The auction started with a bid of £1,000 from Mr Edward Evans, J.P. It then advanced with bids of £100 up to £2,500, which was made by Mr R. J. Jones, J.P. There being no further advance the property was then withdrawn. We understand that negociations for sale by private contract are now going on, and that the property is very likely to change hands shortly. The vendor's solicitors were Messrs Smith and Davies, of Aberystwyth.
