Both elements of the place name, Tavern + Spite suggest that there was a tavern here. Spite is derived from Ysbyty - (a Welsh word now used for hospital), where, in mediaeval times, it is said pilgrims on their way to Strata Florida, St Davids and other monastic sites, could be offered hospitality.
