Convicted of having smuggled malt, 1847

"SEIZURE OF ILLICIT MALT. - At Cardigan on Wednesday last, a young woman named Mary Stephens, residing in St. Mary's Lane, was brought before the Magistrates, charged on the information of Mr. Henry Stephens, Officer of Excise, with having in her possession a considerable quantity of smuggled malt. The evidence fully established the charge against the prisoner, and the mode in which she was detected reflected great credit on the activity and intelligence of the officer. The prisoner was convicted of the charge, and in default of paying the fine imposed, was committed to the House of Correction for three months." Welshman 31 Dec 1847
