SHOP ASSISTANTS' SOCIAL. - On Wednesday
evening the annual social of the Early Closing
Association was held at the Oriental Cafe, Great
Darkgate-street. Mr J C Rea, president of the
Association, occupied the chair, and he was sup-
ported by the other officials and a large gather-
ing of the fraternity. The programme, which opened
with an address by the Chairman, included a
mandoline solo by Miss Doughton, who was also
accompanist; comic songs by 'Bethel' and Mr
L Thomas; songs by Miss Pollie Jones, Miss
Sargeant, and Mr Lewis Morgan. There were
also barn dances, quadrilles, schottische, lancers,
waltz, Circassian circles, and games, while in the
intervals gramophone music was given by Mr W
Rowlands. A pleasant evening concluded at
eleven o'clock, the secretaries and M.C.'s, Messrs
D Alban Lewis and Rowley Hughes, being warmly
congratulated on their successful efforts. The
catering provided by Mr Hohenberg was also

...a splendid tea was partaken of at the Oriental Cafe, which gave the greatest satisfaction. Mr. Hohenburg and Mr. Brooks being most attentive in seeing to the wants of the party. WG 1 Sept 1904
